Published annually by the North Carolina Maritime History Council, Tributaries is the only periodical devoted to disseminating the fruits of new research into the maritime history of the Southeastern United States. Council members receive the current issue of Tributaries as a membership benefit. Additional current issues may be purchased from the Council's office. You may access a cumulative table of contents for previous issues here.
Tributaries seeks to support continuing historical, archaeological, and cultural research by publishing articles and reviews related to the maritime history and culture of the Southeastern United States in general and North Carolina in particular . The journal accepts a broad range of articles in the field of maritime studies. All members of the maritime history community, including students and independent researchers, are welcome to submit articles and reviews. Contributors need not be members of the Maritime Council or live in the state of North Carolina. Manuscripts submitted for consideration must be based on original research and analysis and all manuscripts are subject to a peer review process at the editor's discretion. Please submit a printed or electronic copy of the manuscript to the editor. An electronic copy will be requested for accepted articles. Contributors will receive four copies of the issue in which their work appears; contributors of book reviews receive one copy.
Submissions should be no longer than thirty double-spaced pages, including citations. On the cover page, please provide a title for the article, as well as the author's names, position, institutional affiliation, and business address, including telephone and email. Authors should keep the editor informed of any address changes. If the article was presented at a conference, please supply the name and date of the conference on the cover page. Please number all pages of the manuscript. All citations should follow the text on separate pages as endnotes. Digital photographs, tables, charts, and maps are welcome and encouraged, but please note that Tributaries is published in black and white. All accepted manuscripts' citations will conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, fifteenth edition. Please consult the Chicago Manual for citations, capitalization, abbreviations, numbers, and other grammatical uses.
Tributaries will not reprint or republish articles submitted to and accepted by other publications. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, it becomes the property of the North Carolina Maritime History Council and may not be reproduced elsewhere without the Council's permission. Requests for reproduction rights should be addressed to the Council's office.
